For accurate testing of pH levels in freshwater aquariums.

What is pH?
One of the major factors which determine good water quality is pH, which is the measure of acidity/ alkalinity in your water. Neutral water has a pH of 7, acid water has a pH of between 0 and 6.9 and alkaline water has a pH between 7.1 and 14.

As a guide, your tap water generally has a pH higher than 7. Most common Tropical Fish are kept in a pH range of 6.8 to 7.5.

Why does the pH level change?
Changes in pH can be caused by chemical reactions and the accumulation of substances in the aquarium.

  • Calcium and magnesium compounds like shells and corals can cause pH alkalinity (raise pH).
  • The build up of waste from fish and plants can cause acidity (lower pH) if there are not enough good bacteria to break down this waste (generally in newly established aquariums).
  • Carbon dioxide, which can increase due to over crowding or inadequate water circulation and aeration, is also a suorce of acid in the aquarium.
