Why test for pH? pH is the measure of the acidity of water. In order for fish to thrive, it is important to maintain aquarium pH at a level similar to their natural habitat. Most freshwater fish do best at a pH range of 6.8 - 7.5. Saltwater fish should be kept in a pH range of 8.2 - 8.4.
When to test for pH? In new aquariums, pH should be tested before fish are added. If necessary, adjust the pH with API pH Up, pH Down or Proper pH (see bottom of page). In established aquariums, pH should be tested weekly since natural materials in the aquarium (such as fish waste and uneaten food) can cause pH changes.
